Tip #15: Creating a Vignette Photo (Photoshop CS2)
By: Donna ChapmanDo you need something just a bit different to frame your photo? Try a
lovely flexible vignette. Start by bringing up your photo, click on the
adjustment layer icon “circle that is half black and half white on the bottom
of the layers pallet” and choose Levels.
When the levels window opens click on the white arrow at the bottom of
the gradient bar at the bottom and drag towards the center. You will notice
that your photo will appear darker.
Select the layer mask thumbnail for that layer (the funky white box). Then,
using the rectangular marquee tool in the top left corner of your tools pallet,
pull out a selection around the edges of the image. Set your foreground color
to black. Click (Alt Backspace) to fill the inside selection with the normal colors.
Deselect you area (Control D). Make certain that you are still on the layer
mask thumbnail, then choose filter > blur > Gaussian blur
Now you can adjust the depth of the blur with the sliding bar at the bottom.
You can also use the + and – at the bottom of the black rectangle to determine
how dark your border is.
When you have played around with it and have that perfect frame. Click OK
and you have another wonderful photo.
