Tip #13: Framed Highlight Photo (Photoshop CS2)
By: Donna ChapmanThis is a cool effect for if you are doing a digital scrapbook. It highlights a
selection so that the inside is in color while outside of the frame is in black
and white. In this case I took a picture that has much more in it than I wanted
and I want to highlight this brother/sister duo of dancers. I know I could just
crop them out but I wanted to try something new.
Using the rectangle tool, select an area, then create a new layer, and fill that
area on the new layer with any color besides white.
Next we add a “stroke” to do that click the little “f” icon at the bottom of
the layers pallet and choose stroke.
Using the stroke dialog box change the color to white (just click on the
box and pick white) set the size to around 15 or so and the position to inside
then click ok (it is almost as if nothing happened).
Set the fill opacity to 0 for that layer and then (you will see a white frame around
your area). Control Click on the layer thumbnail to load the selection. Add
a hue saturation adjustment layer and adjust to black and white quality that
you wish.
Click on the right side (blue) side of the layer and then type ”Control I”. (shortcut
for Inverse). It will switch the outside to black and white and the inside to color.
Then select both layers 1 & 2 and use your move tool and move the frame as
you would like. (You can even use a free transform and set it at an angle).
