Tip # 6: Selective Contrast Photo
By: Tedric Garrison (Photoshop 7)Open the image you want to modify. On the image menu (3rd from the left)
Click on Adjustments, then click on levels . . . this will bring up a graph similar
to the second image below called: "the Levels Dialog Box".
In the Levels Dialog Box you can drag the triangle slider bars to reach the
desired levels of Black, White, or Gray. Usually, you will only need to
play with the gray slider bar, because adjusting all three may end up being
counter productive. Remember to click on the "OK" button to save any
changes. Note that on the image above, the little girl was good but the rest
of the image got washed out. (That's what I meant by counter productive.)

An easy solution is to only work on one section at a time. Grab the
magnetic lasso tool (second from the top on the left side of the tool bar)
and then run your levels on just the girl herself. After you get the girl, go
back up to the select menu (5th from the left) and click on "inverse". This
will change what is selected from the girl to everything else BUT the girl.
Now you can run levels again on the rest of the scene. The end result you
see below. The girl is brighter, the beach itself is darker.
