  Make Money From Your
 Photos Without Selling

 By:  Dianne McLay

So you'd like to make money by selling your photos, but like many of us, you lack the confidence or desire to be a sales person. There is a way to make money with your camera without having to sell. It's not a guaranteed path to riches, but it is fun and will help you improve your photographic skills.

Photo competitions, even amateur ones, can be very lucrative with thousands of dollars worth of prizes. Some offer cash prizes and others give cameras and photographic equipment to the winners. Most will publish a selection of the winning photos on a website, or in a magazine or newspaper. Some even exhibit your photograph in a gallery.

So how do you find out about photo competitions? Start by looking in these 3 places:

     1. Search the Internet
Try typing in "photo competition" then "your country" then the "current year".
You'll find pages and pages of listings for competitions. Many of these will allow
you to send in your photos via a website so you won't even have to spend money
      on printing or postage.

      2. Read Photography Magazines
Most photo magazines run a competition or two for their readers. They will often
have a monthly theme that photographers can shoot for, so you get to practice
different style of photography each month.

If you're concerned that your photographic skills aren't good enough to win competitions, look for magazines with "photo doctor" pages where readers can send in their photos for expert advice and suggestions for improvement. These pages still award prizes of cameras, photographic equipment or free magazine subscriptions, even though the photos are chosen because they exhibit faults.

      3. Look in Your Local Newspaper
Local organizations, councils or businesses sometimes have photo competitions
aimed at raising awareness of products, services or local issues. You'll find these
advertised in local newspapers, magazines or in brochures.

The best thing about this type of photography competition is that they are NOT aimed at photographers. Because they're aimed at the general population, and not at people specifically interested in photography, the standard of photography will be lower, so
you'll have a much better chance of winning.

Enter Photo Competitions Now
So, if you've been thinking about using your camera to make money, start by entering some photo competitions right now. You don't need to go out and sell your photographs - just send them in. Even if you don't win right away, you'll improve your photography and probably see your entries exhibited in online galleries. Give yourself a better chance of winning by reading the article How to Win Photo Competitions.
