Useful Tips to Take Good
Pictures of Children
By Mong Wee John NgIn photography, children are one of my favorite subjects as they always make the picture look interesting especially candid shots of children having fun. Here are some tips for ensuring photos of children are even more memorable.
Meet them eye-to-eye
As a subject, children feel uncomfortable in the presence of big looming adults. You can assure them by bringing yourself down to the child's level. Do not hesitate to crouch down if the need arises. This will give your shots a 'kids eye view' and won't distort their image (as taking the shot from above does). More importantly, this will help them to feel at ease and result in more natural looking photographs.
Capture natural expressions
While posed shots are great, I feel that better results can be gained by capturing an image when their thoughts are preoccupied with something else (while at play). These are what you might refer to as candid shots. The result is better when you capture their faces enjoying the moment rather than about them thinking about the camera and freezing a smile in an unnatural way.
Familiarity ensures success
Just like actors and models who are accustomed to cameras and feel totally at ease during photo shoots, children who have grown up having their photographs taken on a daily basis will be a lot less likely to freeze or show off in front of a camera. You might want to start early and make photo-taking a part of everyday. Your kids may even pick up photographic skills along the way and this may be the start of a blossoming career in photography.
Children grow up quickly
As an adult, I often look back at the photographs taken by my father while I was young. It is very interesting to see how you have grown over the years. Children have great interest in themselves even during the growing years. You can record their growth from toddler to child to young adult by taking a family photo every year around the same time. Choose memorable events to make it especially specially, for example the first day of school, school events, winning trophies, etc.
Through many shoots of children, you will soon learn soft skills in child-handling and improve your photographic skills along the way. There is nothing that can beat the satisfaction of taking a good photograph of a child especially that of your own children.
